I entirely fucked up a job interview. It was horrible. I want to dig myself a grave and die.
So I went out to buy a good microphone and webcame an hour before it started. Then their skype didn't work and we had to do it over phone. And I have baaaaad phone-anxiety anyway. The guy I was originally supposed to do the interview with, wasn't even there. It were two other guys, at least one of them from a different location. However, they were extremely nice and sympathetic, which just makes it even worse... But so far so good.
Well, if you have a job interview, you usually prepare those 0815 questions - "what are your strengths/weaknesses? How did you find this job? What do you like about it? Why do you have a gap of two years in your CV?" but they didn't ask any of those. Therefore - nothing I prepared for, for the most part.
For context, I applied for an apprenticeship. Which basically means, I applied to LEARN this job. Meaning - I have never worked in that field before and have zero experience.
They obviously asked me what I think the job consists of, what kind of tasks they do etc. I listed everything I've read on every single job description online. Every goddamn site said the same things. But apparently... That was completely wrong. Everything I listed were completely separate jobs and none of it was actually part of the job I applied for. And I just googled it again - I did mix one of those things up, but besides that, everything I mentioned was listed on every motherfucking website about this topic.
Then they picked apart my whole application. Because apparently everything I listed under my interests, what I like about the job and why I think it would be a good fit, is also completely unrelated. Which.. again - all those things are listed as required/prefered qualifications every. fucking. where. Every website and every job ad says it's good to have those requirements if you want to work in that field. But they didn't see how those things are related to one another. They even thought I might have confused this job with a completely different one...
I also mentioned in my application I enjoy both - working in a team and on projects of my own. Which... I don't know; tell me if I'm stupid, but I think those things are kinda self-explanatory? But from everything I said and wrote, they wanted an elaboration on THOSE things. Like, what I mean with the words "team work" and "projects". Not just examples - definitions. On the words.
That was the point I completely got lost because it seemed so obvious to me that I didn't know how I should elaborate that more, except giving some examples. I just didn't understand what they didn't understand. Well, and that wasn't the only question of that sort..
I really didn't know anything anymore. I just didn't know how to answer their questions. And every time I did, they said it wasn't correct and actually didn't have anything to do with that job. i started stuttering HORRIBLY. I honestly couldn't form a single goddamn sentence anymore. At one point I stopped in the middle of a sentence and had a really awkward silence for 1-2 minutes, where I considered just hanging up, blocking their number and all their emails.
I was so lost. I got so insecure because everything I said was incorrect. How am I supposed to answer any further questions, when they basically tell me I don't even get the very basics right?
They also asked me if I knew what engines they have in their specific location. They don't have a lot of information on their website, especially not about that location. So I obviously thought they meant the type of engines. Which I told them. Got some wrong (because how tf should I know if they don't mention it anywhere), but whatever.
WELP, but they actually meant the SPECIFIC name of the specific engine, in the specific location. Which are names like your printer at home, when you connect it over bluetooth. Mostly consisting of random letters and numbers. Which first of all is hard to remember and second.. I've never worked there, how was I supposed to know those things?
I feel so stupid. I'm seriously crying out of embarrassment. I couldn't even talk anymore! I was just stuttering and constantly this fucking awkward silence.. jesus, it went so bad.. However, they offered me to do a day of kinda test-working there, so I can actually see what the job is like. And one of the guys said we seem to be on about the same level on an interpersonal-level. At least something, I guess..
But I just feel horribly. What the fuck did I do wrong, researching and applying for this job for two years and apparently still getting basically EVERYTHING wrong?! Is just wanna disappear, it was so uncomfortable and embarrassing... Of course I have to keep writing applications. I don't even know anymore how I'm supposed to do that. So far I based my applications on the information and the job-ads I found online, but that was apparently not correct. HOWEVER, the company where I was supposed to start at originally (which didn't work out because Corona...and they turned out to be assholes...) loved my application and said I seem to be very fitting for this job?
Therefore, I have no idea who or what to believe anymore and no fucking idea how to continue this bullshit, without completely fucking up again.
Yet another Q30 review, but with excessively full details from someone who has used the Q20s every day for 2 months for calls and music. Also including thoughts on the app and comparison to Anker ear buds and wired Sonys.
To be fair, I love Anker products. I have multiple power banks, chargers, cords and headphones. I regularly used the Soundcore Liberty Neo True Wireless Earbuds (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MCGZK3B?psc=1) which I gifted after upgrading to the Life P2s (https://smile.amazon.com/Soundcore-Wireless-Microphones-Reduction-Waterproof/dp/B07SJR6HL3). Both are excelent buds, and the Neos were crazy cheap last year for gifts, but the better battery and mic make the P2s my current bud recommendation.
I've been using the Q20s every single work day for the past 2 months, mostly connected to my laptop, but also my phone at times. Being able to use them all day for whatever I was doing has been great. No buds can compare to over the ears, so unless I'm doing something active I've used the Q20s. I've always had both options, but buds just aren't comfortable after a couple hours at most.
Prior to my wireless blutooth hold out through last year, I've been using Sony MDR XB 500s that are at least 10 years old. They were an excelent value back in the day for ~$80. I bought an S10e used for $350 (who pays for new flagships?) at least partly for the headphone jack. The jack is no longer a concern after going to Bluetooth, but to be fair, I don't play games on my phone.
Ok, that's done, here's my review in what I consider my order of importance:
The Q30s and Q20s are both so much better than I ever thought I'd get out of sub BT $100 cans. I held out on BT because I never thought they would compare to wired, but that's not really a concern for me now. I tested all of these with lossless audio files and it's still very hard to make any complaints. My testing files were Tool Schism (Rock), Beethoven's 7th (Classical), MGK body bag, Seven Lions Serpent of Old (Bassy Electronic), Major Lazer Pon De Floor (EDM), Sublime Garden Grove (90s Funk?), Talking Heads Once in a Lifetime (80s) and Mr Mister Kyrie (80s) for a good range.
Over all, the quality from the 30s is slightly better, which I expected. That said, if spending another $80 is a reach for you, this alone probably shouldn't be what seals the deal. However, if you don't have any yet, these headphones are absolutely amazing for the the value compared to wired. Huge range of sound, the bass is amazing and the trebles are detailed and rich. I risked damaging my ears with high volume and never heard artifacts. The biggest difference was in the Bass. The 30s go soooo deep, almost too much on some settings (to be discussed later). If you need bass, these won't leave you wanting. Compared to my wired Sony extra bass cans, all I can say is these are LOUD.
One word: Wow. Short anecdote, when I bought the Q20s, I also bought the Sony WH-1000XM3s. I knew I didn't really think I needed $250 headphones but wanted to compare and wanted to see how much of a difference there was. I ended up returning them because I just couldn't justify the extra $200. That said, they had clearly better ANC. I don't have them any more so I can't truly compare back and forth with the 30s, but I can say the 30s are noticeably better than the 20s, especially when you can set them how you prefer in the app. I tested with big AC unit and music on my home theater, and when you pick the highest level of cancellation it's like it's not even there. I'm sorry I couldn't get on an airplane, but I took the 20s on one and they were great, I have no reason to believe these aren't better.
The 30's got here at about 10 am and it's 1:15 am now. I've been using them all day, music and calls. When I turn them off then on again, it's telling me "Battery Medium." I don't want to give you a solid number yet (will update tomorrow) but fully expect no issue with a full 24 hours of usage.
Update: Here are the recordings:
Pretty disappointing. The 20's are much better.
This was my biggest complaint with the Q20s. They pinched my head after a while, especially when I had my glasses on. If the 20's were a 6/10, the fancy Sony 1000s were a 10/10 and the 30s are a 9/10. Soft but not too soft. Like I said, they've been on for about 14 hours and it feels like nothing.
Maybe this should be two categories? But I didn't expect problems with something from Anker. Build is great, the looks are slightly better than the 20s (love the gold A logo). I don't care too much about the buttons, but something fancy like the Sony 1000s with touch functions aren't what I expected on something less than half the price. Power, ANC on/off, Volume, Pause/Play/Answer are super intuitive. Adjustment on the length is totally fine and I have a giant head. I was confused by the ANC on/off button, doesn't seem to do anything if you're connected to a phone with the app running. They connect instantly to my phone and can be connected to a second device with no issue. I use the Jabra Direct USB dongle and app on my laptop to auto connect skype/teams calls and that thing can handle pretty much any device. My second biggest complaint with the 20s was the range, I could use my buds two flights down and outside the house with no issue, but the 20's struggled on the same floor. The 30s work as well as the P2 buds and I had no drops in the basement with the phone on the 2nd floor. USB C is clearly an upgrade.
New for the 30s. Really great. Instant changes to the ANC settings and equalizer. I'm not one to mess with an equalizer, so my main take away is the "Recommend" default in the app is what I stuck with. But if you want more bass it's there, same with about 15 different pretuned options. The ANC settings are where you can make a difference. Personally, I want headphones like this so I don't hear anything, but the "transparency" mode lets you hear voices or environmental sounds like you didn't have headphones on. Nice if you don't want to seclude yourself or get hit by a train crossing the street. This alone probably makes a big difference for anyone that really wants to fine tune their sound, but it is replicatable with an EQ in your media player.
These headphones come with an excellent case. Perfect custom fit for them, something I would only expect with $200+ headphones. When I got my Q20s, I ordered 4 different cases with the full intention of returning all but the one I liked the most, which ended up costing $15 on Amazon. The main reason I picked the one I did was that it was the smallest, but it wasn't specific to the Ankers. The case these came with is an exact fit and is clearly the right one, even if it's a bit bigger (rectangular as opposed to an oval).
Response to other reviews in this sub:
The ear pads were glued perfectly fine on mine. My test calls had no issue with the microphone. Windows 10 had zero issues, but I still prefer using the Jabra dongle, not sure why it's so much better than straight windows BT connection. It lets me mute/switch devices/connect to phone PC without issue. They are looser then the 20 but that's better imo.
TLDR: Buy these over the 20s if you want the best value over the ear BT headphones on the market, unless the mic difference doesn't work for your use case. I didn't detail the other random headphone's I've used, but I've had a bunch and none compare to the Anker value, 20s or 30s. USB C is a clear upgrade if you don't want to carry multiple cables. If you already have 10s or 20s, gift them and get yourself the 30s especially if they do a Black Friday or Xmas sale.
Hit me up with any questions, I'd be happy to answer if I can. I plan on doing a Mic recording tomorrow.
