My voyage so far

I have been using Linux for 20 years now. It was the fall if 1999. My first experience was Red Hat 5.2 which I bought in a retail box set at a bookstore in the mall. When I got home, I jumped in with both feet.
I broke my computer on the first try. Fortunately, I had a friend or two that also used Linux. They had other friends in a thing called SLUG or Suncoast Linux Users Group. This was a group of ordinary users, local programmers and developers, educators, students. Just regular people. Speakers would come and give talks about new innovations and products in Linux and Open Source.
They were meeting the next evening at the local library. So we packed up my whole PC and hauled it to the meeting. I was amazed at what I found.
No one laughed at me. No one told me my distro was shit and I should use what they used. No one tried to ask how to hack or do illegal things. We set up my PC and we formatted the hard drive and installed Red Hat. We got it all working, including a problematic print driver. We also helped two people set up WiFi on their laptops, and heard an informational presentation about Cisco routers.
This was what Linux was all about back then. Helping one another, figuring out problems, solving them, sending these ideas to developers. It was the natural order of things in Open Source that ideas and opinions change, that forks happen, that some splits are on good terms, some on bad.
I have tried more distributions than I can remember or even count. I have even grown so frustrated that I tossed my hands up in frustration and ran for my Windows installation disk and quit. But that never lasted long, my longest time away from Linux was 57 days.
I tried Red Hat, Mandrake, Mandriva, and Fedora Core. I tried Slackware, SuSE, even Gentoo. I was a certified distro hopper for many years. It was fun to try new things, push it until it broke, then figure out why.
My longest run has been with Debian and Debian based systems. From Etch to Stretch, believe it or not. This includes Ubuntu, Mint, and countless more. I really enjoyed Crunchbang, I enjoy the command line and the simplicity of it. But Bunsen, sorry to say, just did not have the same flame (if you'll pardon the pun.)
But I began having trouble after I suffered two strokes in 2013. Upgrading was difficult. Things that were once easy, like writing simple shell scripts, dotfiles, or even a proper fstab, I had to look up. New things like systemd were confusing to me. I decided that to keep using Linux and keeping my sanity, I needed to "dumb it down" just a little.
I had used Ubuntu once before on my laptop. I decided to install Lubuntu, since my favorite WM is Openbox. Sure, it was easier. But I was not challenged at all. It worked a little too well. I almost returned to Debian.
I remembered one thing. When I had to Google something, the best answers almost always came from the Arch wiki and community. I attempted to install Arch and failed spectacularly.
After reading some reviews on Distrowatch, I decided to try the Openbox community build of Manjaro. The installation was smooth and straightforward. Even though I have older hardware, it all came together with little problems for me.
It was easier than Arch. But "the Arch way" of doing things is still just different enough from "the Debian way" that it keeps me challenged. Every few days, I had to learn a little something. Some things made absolutely no sense to me, Cron is a vital system service. Why would from not be enabled by default? That was just stupid. But I figured out almost all the stupid niggly things and, after about 6 weeks of poking, I am finally enjoying my Manjaro system. I am almost ready to publish my first "rice" dotfiles on GitHub for flame and scrutiny on unixporn
Some of you, if you made it this far, are asking "what is this geezer's point?” I guess, at 52 years old, I am too old for all the bickering about whose operating system is better. I get tired of all the measuring.
It goes further; the Linux "community" is no longer "user friendly." And certainly not for new users. It is, for the most part, a very hostile place. The Internet was not around when I began my Linux journey, certainly not in the way it is today. You can not just ask a friend.
So we dig deeper online for answers. Every device we have has the ubiquitous web browser. We have more permutations of forums, chat rooms, IRC, wiki, Discord, Reddit, all places where hostilities flare up easily. It may be a simple question. But the answer is met by "RTFM, you n00b!" That is a very common answer. Then others may suggest that the distro the OP is using is at fault, try the distro they are using. Then others flame the guy answering the OP, drowning him out. The voices get louder, spawning numerous arguments, with increasing volume of "is not" and "IS TOO” with exponential increase of expletives. Lost in the sea of words is the OP's question. And, of course, an out of place troll asking how to use Kali to hack WiFi routers. :)
The Arch Community, and by extension the Manjaro Community, for the most part, is an exception. It's not been as volatile as I have seen before and has always helped me when I did a quick search. I hope this never changes
The pissing contest between Arch and Manjaro I simply do not understand. Manjaro is not less than Arch simply because it is easier to install and configure. There is nothing bad about "Arch based" any more than "Debian based" or "Ubuntu based" distributions.
It always makes me chuckle. Are these not all Debian based?
For the record, guys, in "* based" distros, packages are held back from upstream for a reason, they want to make sure that the layer of tools and configuration added by their distro from the original are not b0rked when something new comes down the pipe. Allegations that Manjaro is somehow profiting by holding Arch packages is ludicrous.
I miss my old LUG. I don't know if they exist elsewhere, but around Tallahassee, there seems to be nothing like it. If I could, I would avoid asking questions on the Internet. But I am probably the only Linux user in a 25 mile radius.
