Random 100% usage and recurrent freezes on Windows 10
About 3 weeks ago, I upgraded from a 4th Gen Intel to a Ryzen 5 platform, so, everything 'was' fine, but soon I realized about this strange behaviour, the computer freezes for about 20-30 seconds constantly. Making some research, I realized that was causing the freeze was a 100% disk usage of the main SSD, I did some research, tried a lot of things, between them: installed a registry file for optimization of SSD's, changed the energy plan to 'max performance', stopped the HDD turning off, reinstalled Windows, reinstalled to a previous version, disabled XMP, nothing worked.
So, after all that, I thought 'well, maybe that old SSD is dying, it's pretty old' (around 5 years) so, taking advantage of my new platform, I ordered a new fancy Nvme PCI-E (from overseas). So, I thought that was it and I was destined to wait for the new ssd to arrive, meanwhile, I tried to get used to this thing. This 100% HDD Usage happens sometimes very often, sometimes once per hour, it's pretty random, it doesn't freeze apps running in other disks tho, for example, when I play a game, they don't freeze (maybe because I have another SSD for games) but if you do something, for example, open Start Menu when this thing is happening, it freezes the whole system, in youtube, you can keep watching the videos up until the point where the video has 'already downloaded', in Netflix, the same. In short, while this happens if you want to read or write in the main disk, the whole computer freezes, if you do nothing, you don't even notice.
I checked the processes, and there's nothing fishy in there, even when it freezes, nothing out of the ordinary. I had a similar problem with another HDD (Mechanical) in the PC from work, and one day the disk just died without any warning, I thought 'well, it's dying so let's replace it' and here I was waiting for the parcel to arrive, which should be this week.
BUT... Here comes the fun part. I work as Sysadmin and this whole time my job as been closed, so, now there's something like a rumour about returning and my boss asked me for some files I have in a small server I mounted, so, I wanted to do things right, so I installed Manjaro, created a small partition and started doing my thing, and here's the thing, in Linux, the freezes don't happen. I've been using Linux for the past 6 hours, I did my Job, some other things, Installed programs, and it didin't happen once. It's definetly a software related issue with Windows. The PC is exactly the same, I haven't touched the hardware.
So I came here looking for help, because when my new SSD arrives, the chances of that thing keep happening are really high, and it is pretty annoying when I'm doing anything else that is not gaming. My specs are:
Ryzen 5 2600 Asrock B450 Steel Legend 16gb of Ram 3000mhz (was running them at 3466Mhz but I though that was the problem) GeForce GTX 1070 Ti 2 SSD's and 2 HDD's
As for right now, running Windows 10 1909 (originally installed 2004 and that's when I rolled back to 1909).
So... Any ideas?
Keyforge-style "Chains" as handicaps for Battle Decks/bundles?
But the question is, once you find that a few decks in the set are better than the others, what do you do about it? I had initially thought to modify the decklists themselves to make the decks more/less powerful, but I had an idea borrowed from another game: in the Keyforge game (where you cannot modify your deck), they balance "more powerful" decks against other decks by using "chains" (encumbrances you willingly take on that slightly "hold back" the other deck). I realized other games have that sort of mechanic (typically labeled as a "handicap", like in golf) or chess)), but I hadn't heard of anyone using that idea in MTG before. Googling around I found a few ideas, but most were like chess handicaps in that it affected the start of the game (initial hand size and starting life), but not the continuing game. I like the Keyforge idea that the initial handicap is less severe, but dragged out over a longer amount of game rounds. So, here's a proposal on how those "chains" could translate into a MTG match:
At the start of a match, each player may start with zero to 25 "chains" (applied based on bidding, handicap, etc.). The number of chains a player has affects their maximum hand size and starting life total:With this mechanic, the difference between 1 chain and 5 chains at the beginning of the game is the same (6 cards in hand and 18 life), but then how long the player is at that level is different (a player starting with 1 chain would start with six cards in hand, draw up to seven cards at the beginning of their turn, and then lose the chain, and not have to discard down to six at the end of the turn).
1-5 chains: -1 max hand size, -2 starting life 6-10 chains: -2 max hand size, -4 starting life 11-15 chains: -3 max hand size, -6 starting life 16-20 chains: -4 max hand size, -8 starting life 21-25 chains: -5 max hand size, -10 starting life
The player with the lowest number of chains goes first (if there is a tie for least number of chains, determine first player randomly). At the beginning of a player's pre-combat main phase, their number of chains goes down by one.
Having the one "chain" value affect both hand size and life simplifies the process of "bidding" on a deck in an Auction-style format (as that wiki page indicates, in an open "auction", where people could freely give both hand size and starting life penalties as their wagers, you then also need a system to indicate which is the bigger sacrifice, to determine who wins the deck for that round of play), which could be helpful?
Keyforge organizes a global database of decks used for tournament play and gives them a global "chains" value. Translating that to an MTG setup, a shared registry of battle deck matchups (or retail Commander decks, or retail Planeswalker decks, etc.) could use that as a way to indicate how to balance those decks within that pool?
What do you think? Anyone tried anything similar to this with their playgroups?
